The Gender Inequality Index (GII) is an index for the measurement of gender disparity which was introduced in the 2010 Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
It is a composite measure that assesses the loss of achievement within a country due to gender inequality.
There are three critical dimensions of the Gender Inequality Index which are reproductive health, empowerment, and labour market participation.
The health dimension is measured through maternal mortality ratio and the adolescent fertility rate.
The empowerment dimension is evaluated by the share of parliamentary seats held by male and female and by secondary and higher education attainment levels.
The labour dimension is measured by the participation of women in the work force.
