Simultaneous deficiency of protein and total food calorific value leads to disease in children called ''Marasmus''.
It is caused by Protein-Energy-Malnutrition (PEM).
It primarily occurs in children of 1 year age group.
Symptoms: Impairs the physical growth, subcutaneous fat (fat visible under the skin) gets highly reduced, ribs become very prominent, hands & legs become very thin, skin becomes dry & wrinkled.
Cure: Diet with an adequate amount of proteins and calorific value should be given to newborn children suffering from the disease.
