f(x)=4x^5+3x^4+2x^3+5x^2+x-3

is divided by (x + 1).

Solution:

When a polynomial f(x) is divided by (x – a), the remainder = f(a).
⇒ Remainder = f(–1)

⇒4(-1)^5+3(-1)^4+2(-1)^3+5(-1)^2+(-1)-3

⇒ –4 + 3 – 2 + 5 – 1 – 3

∴ Remainder is –2
