Solution:

Let rate upstream be x kmph.
Then, rate downstream = 2x kmph
∴ Rate of current

(2x - x) =

x/2

kmph
∴

x/2

= 2 ⇒ x = 4
∴ Rate upstream = 4 kmph
∴ Rate downstream = 8 kmph
∴ Rate in still water =

1/2

(8 + 4) = 6 kmph
