There is a building with 18 floors excluding the ground floor numbered as G, 1, 2, .... 18. In order to reach the 3rd floor one has to climb 42 steps. If the number of steps between any two floors be the same, how many steps in all will one have to climb in order to reach the 9 th floor from the 5 th floor?

Solution:

3rd floor + 2nd floor + 1st floor ground floor = 42 steps
∴ Number of steps between two floors =

{42}/3

= 14
9th floor - 4
8th floor - 3
7th floor - 2
6th floor - 1
5th floor
∴ Number of steps =14x4 = 56
