In 1869, Johann Friedrich Miescher, a young Swiss medical student, isolated an acidic substance from the pus cells obtained from bandages used for dressing wounds. He named this acidic substance as nuclein as it was specifically associated with the cell nucleus. He found that nuclein contained large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus.
