Viral glycoproteins bind to receptorsin the host cell’s plasma membrane causing infection. This causes the cell to transport the virus into its cytoplasm via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Inside the host cell, virus sheds its protein coat. A viral enzyme called reverse transcriptase reads the viral RNA strand and makes a DNA copy. The viral DNA copy then becomes integrated into the host cell’s DNA and is duplicated along with the host cell’s DNA during normal cell division.
