Facilitated diffusion is defined as rapid, assisted diffusion of solutes across the membrane in which direction of transport depends on concentration or electrochemical gradient (higher to lower concentration, or “downhill” transport). It is a passive process in which energy is not required. It is bidirectional and the net movement stops when the rate of movements across the membrane becomes same in both directions. The rate of transport is maximum when all the available transport proteins are saturated.
