van Arkel method is useful for removing all the oxygen and nitrogen present in the form of impurity in certain metals such as zirconium and titanium for getting ultra-pure metals. In this method the metal is converted to a volatile unstable compound taking care that the impurities are not affected during compound formation. The compound thus obtained is decomposed to get the pure metal.
