Amniocentesis involves withdrawing some of the amniotic fluid that bathes the developing foetus and analysing the foetal cells and dissolved substances. It is used to test for the presence of certain genetic disorders, such as Downs’ syndrome (DS), haemophilia, Tay-Sachs disease, sickle-cell disease and certain muscular dystrophies. It can also reveal the baby’s gender.
