The net primary productivity is the biomass that is available for consumers (herbivores and decomposers) for consumption. These organisms (heterotrophs) also produce new organic matter and the process is called secondary production because it depends on the production of autotrophic organisms. The rate of production of organic compounds by the heterotrophs is known as secondary productivity.
