(1) Beriberi is a disease caused by a vitamin B1(thiamine) deficiency. There are two types of the disease:
wet beriberi and dry beriberi.
Wet beriberi affects the heart and circulatory system. In extreme cases, wet beriberi can cause heart failure. Dry beriberi damages the nerves and can lead to a loss of muscle strength and eventually, muscle paralysis.
Beriberi can be life threatening if it isn’t treated.
Night Blindness caused by nearsightedness, cataracts,or vitamin A deficiency is treatable. Corrective lenses,such as eyeglasses or contacts, can improve nearsighted vision both during the day and at night.
Let your doctor know if you still have trouble seeing in dim light even with corrective lenses.
Scurvy is a disease resulting from a lack of vitamin C.
Early symptoms include weakness, feeling tired, curly hair, and sore arms and legs.
Without treatment, decreased red blood cells, gum disease,and bleeding from the skin may occur. As scurvy worsens there can be poor wound healing, personality changes,and finally death from infection or bleeding.
Traditionally, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease in which the bone tissue doesn’t properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities. But increasingly,research is revealing the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems.
