Vikramashila was a well known university and the center learning in Bhagalpur district of Bihar. It was located 24 miles east of Bhagalpur on the hills of patharghati, from where extensive remains from ancient times have been found. This university was established by the Pala ruler Dharmapal. It was a major center of Buddhist learning. There was a group of learned teachers here among whom Deepanker is most prominent. The other learned men were Rakshit, Virochan, Abhayankar, Gyanpad, Gyanshri etc. In 1203, the Muslim invader Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed it.
