(+) and (−) represents the direction of rotation of plane polarised light (+) is clockwise rotation and (−) is anticlockwise rotation.α-is used when - OH group at anomeric carbon is below the ring in Haworth projection, β is used when - OH group at anomeric carbon is above the rings in Haworth projection.
