(2) According to the 2011 Census, 833.5 million persons live in rural areas, while 377.1 million persons live in urban areas. The rural-urban distribution is 68.84 per cent and 31.16 per cent respectively. Urban proportion went up from 17.3 per cent in 1951 to 31.2 per cent in 2011.
