The word 'scale' which means 'extent' fits in the first sentence appropriately. Though 'size' and 'magnitude' also fit appropriately in I lent considering the sentence II, we see that 'scale' fits in the context of the sentence properly as it is used a lot when we talk about anything in Geography.
