In how many ways is it possible to choose a white square and a black square on a chess board, so that the square must not lie in the same row or column?

Solution:

(d) In a chess board, total square blocks are 64, In those of them 32 are white and 32 are black square.
∴ Required number of ways

= ^ { 32 } C _ { 1 }× \; ^ { 24 } C _ { 1 }

= 32 × 24 = 768
