then

f(x)+f(y)

is equal to

Solution:

(a) Given,

\;\;\;\;\f(x)=\log({1+x}/{1-x})

then

\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;f(y)=\log({1+y}/{1-y})

Now,

f(x) + f(y)=\log({1+x}/{1-x})+\log({1+y}/{1-y})

\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;=\log\{{({1+x})({1+y})}/{(1-x)(1-y)}\}

Now,

f({x+y}/{1+xy})=\log {\{1+{x+y}/{1+xy}\}/\{1-{x+y}/{1+xy}\}

\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;=\log({1+xy+x+y}/{1+xy-x-y})

\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;=\log\{{({1+x})+y({1+x})}/{(1-x)-y(1-x)}\}

\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;=\log\{{({1+x})({1+y})}/{(1-x)(1-y)}\}

From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get

f(x)+f(y)
