Given:

\x^{2} - √2\x - 4 = 0

Concept used:
Split the middle term and factorize
Calculation:

\x^{2} - √2\x - 4 = 0

⇒ \x^{2} -2√2\x + √2\x -4 = 0

⇒ \x(\x -2√2) + √2(\x -2√2) = 0

⇒ (\x -2√2)(\x + √2) = 0

⇒ (\x -2√2) = 0 \or(\x + √2) = 0

⇒ \x = 2√2 \or \x = -√2

∴ The roots are $-√2$ and $2√2$
