Validate

Solution:

The question asks, how many are either British or French. In other words, how many people are British or French. Statement (1) is insufficient because it tells us nothing about the French. Statement (2) is insufficient for the same reason, only that it doesn’t say anything about the British.
Combine the two statements, you know that

(100 + 180 = 280)

is the number of people that are either British or French.
