Solution:

If you take statement (1) and divide each term by 2, the result is

x + 2y = 10

. Thus,

x + 2y

is solved for. If you take statement (2) and add

(1 /2)x

to both sides and multiply each term by 2, the result is also

x + 2y = 10

. Therefore, either statement is sufficient.
