The sum and product of two integers are 26 and 165 respectively. The difference between these two integers is __________.

Solution:

Let the two integers be

x

and

y

According to the given condition,

x+y=26

and

x y=165

using the identity,

(x+y)^{2}=(x-y)^{2}-4 x y

⇒ 26^{2}=(x-y)^{2}-4 × 65

⇒ 676=(x-y)^{2}-660

x-y=4

So,

x=15

and

y=11
