Cabinet Mission:

It was created to discuss and formulate a plan for the transfer of powers from the British government to the Indian leadership.

Cabinet Mission arrived in New Delhi on 24th March 1946.

Clement Attlee was the British prime minister who sent the cabinet mission to India.

It was a three-member mission, namely;

• Lord Pethick Lawrence - Secretary of State for India
• Sir Stafford Cripps - President of the Board of Trade
• A. V. Alexander - First Lord of Admiralty

Archibald Wavell was the viceroy in India during the period of cabinet mission.

Cabinet Mission published its plan on 16th May 1946.

The formation of an interim government in India was suggested by the cabinet mission.

• The first interim government in India was appointed under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru on 2nd September 1946.
• Jawaharlal Nehru was appointed as the vice president of this interim government.

The setting up of a constituent assembly to frame a constitution for India was recommended by the cabinet mission.
