In case of Simple interest:
SI = PRT/100
CALCULATION:
P = Rs. 40000, Rate = 16%, Time = T years
Hence,

9600 = (40000 × 16 × T)/100

⇒

T = 1.5

years
∴ Time = 1.5 years
