Solution:
The idea of partition of Bengal was brought up during the tenure of Lord Curzon for administrative reasons.
The reason cited by the British government was that the smaller states can be better administered.
But the actual reason was to shatter the Hindu-Muslim unity
Bengal was to divide into the following:
- Eastern Bengal: Eastern part of Bengal and including Assam in it with its capital at Dacca
- Western province : It included the western Bengal, Odisha and Bihar with its capital at Calcutta (Kolkata now).
The province was to be divided on the following bases:
- Language : Separating Hindi speaking regions from Bengali speaking regions.
- Religion : Western Bengal included Hindu majority areas while the other one had Muslim majority areas.
Partition of Bengal took place on October 16, 1905
Anti partition Movement:
- Opposing the decision of dividing the state, people came out on the streets of Bengal in protest.
- People showcased the Hindu-Muslim unity in various processions.
- The day of partition was observed as ' National Day of Mourning'.
- People came out on streets singing ' Bande Mataram ' and '
- Amar Sonar Bangla'.
- On the day of Raksha Bandhan Hindus and the Muslims tied rakhis on the wrists of each other as a symbol of Brotherhood.
