Area of a circle = $\mathit{\pi }{\mathit{R}}^2$
CALCULATION:

Side of square = 42 cm
So, radius of circle = 42/2 = 21 cm
⇒ Area of the shaded portion = Area of the square – Area of the circle
= ${42}^2\mathit{–}\left(\frac{22}{7}\right)\times \left(21\right)\times \left(21\right)$
= 1764 – 1386
= $378\mathit{c}{\mathit{m}}^2$
∴ the area of the shaded portion is 378 cm2
