A compound P with molecular formula C6H10 decolorizes bromine water and undergoes oxidation with acidified KMnO4 to give a dicarboxylic acid with the same number of carbon atoms. The dicarboxylic acid serves as an important precursor in the manufacture of nylon- 6,6 . The compound P is
