Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehensions, learning needs and academic progress during a lesion or unit or course. Summative assessment on the other hand, aims at evaluating the students' learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. They have a high point of value such as in Olympiads.
