India is a federal union comprising 28 States and 8 Union Territories. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has been bifurcated into two Union Territories (UT), namely, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The newly formed union territories have been formed under a reorganisation act passed by the Parliament on 5th-6th August, 2019 which came into effect on 31st October, 2019. Thus, Manipur is not a Union Territory but one of the states of India. There are 28 states and 8 Union Territories in India.
