A fraction is equivalent to

. Its denominator and numerator add up to 91. What is the difference between the denominator and numerator of this fraction?

Solution:

Let numerator = x
∴ Denominator

=91–x

According to question,

\;\;{x}/{91-x}=\;\;{5}/{8}

⇒8{x}=5(91-{x})

⇒8x=455-5x

⇒8x+5x=455

⇒13x=455

⇒x=\;\;{455}/{13}

∴x=35

Hence, numerator

=x=35

and denominator

r=91-x=91-35=56

∴ Diff. between denominator and numerator

=56-35=21
