Middle-grade children sometimes do not regard rectangles and squares as parallelograms. As a teacher, to help such students, you should:

Tell children that rectangles and squares have different mathematical properties than those of parallelograms.
Not initiate such discussions as middle school students cannot do generalizations.
Give a variety of manipulatives to children that have the same mathematical properties but different physical characteristics.
Ask the teacher teaching at the primary grades to help such students as these concepts are dealt at primary grades.
