Let p be any positive integer and 2x + p=2y,p+ y= x and x + y = z. For what value of p wouldx + y + z attain its maximum value?

Solution:

(a) 2x+ p = 2y,p+ y = x and x+ y - z

\ \ (\given)

⇒ x + y + z — 2z
⇒ x + y + z = 2(x + y)
So, p = x - y = 2(y-x)
The condition is satisfied only when x = y.
