If a boat travels upstream from A to B and then downstream from B to A covering 100 km in 9 h. If the speed of the boat in still water is 10 km/h more than the speed of the stream, then what would have been the speed of the stream?

Solution:

(b) Let the speed of stream be x
Speed of boat = 10 + x
Speed downstream = 10 + x + x = 2x + 10
Speed upstream = 10 + x - x = 10
According to the question,

{50}/{2x + 10} + {50}/10

= 9
⇒

{500 + 100x + 500}/{(2x +10)10}

= 9
⇒ 1000 + 100x = 180x + 900
⇒ 80x = 100
⇒ x =

10/8

⇒ x = 1.25 km/h
