Due to 20% hike in bus fare, a 10% fall in the passenger traffic was recorded. Yet the daily collection of a bus depot increased by ₹ 150. What was the daily collection of the bus depot after the fare hike?

Solution:

(c) Let the fare of bus be ₹ x
and number of passengers be y.
Total amount = x • y
New bus fare = 1.2x
Number of passengers = 0.9y
New amount = 1.2x × 0.9y
According to the question,
1.2x × 0.9y - x • y = 150
⇒ 1.08xy- xy = 150
⇒ 0.08xy = 150
⇒ xy =

{150}/{0 .08}

⇒ xy = ₹ 1875
∴ Collection after hike = xy + 150 = 1875 +150 = 2025
