Mr. Aman went in his car to meet his friend Rahul. He drove 30 km towards North and then 40 km towards West. He then turned to South and covered 8 km. Further, he turned to East and moved 26 km. Finally, he turned right and drove 10 km and then turned left to travel 19 km. How far and in which direction is he from the starting point?

East, 5 km

Solution:

We can draw a direction diagram according to the problem statement

Net displacement in the east direction

=26+19-40=5 {km}

Net displacement in the north direction

=30-8-10=12 {km} .

Hence, net distance from the starting point

=√{12^{2}+5^{2}}=13 {km} .
