Gypsum is a very soft sulphate mineral composed of calcium sulphate dihydrate, with the chemical formula
CaSO 4 â‹… 2 H 2 O .
On heating, gypsum loses water and gives the hemihydrate
( CaSO 4 ⋅ ‌ H 2 O ) or the anhydrite.
