Even a whole lifetime was not enough to pay back what they owed their parents, let alone all the others.
In short, every human being owed his humanity to others and benefitted from a world, to the creation of which he had not contributed anything .
To talk about repaying the debts did not therefore make sense except in a clumsy and metaphoncal way of describing one s response to unsolicited but indispensable gifts.
Every individual is born with a debt, which is beyond his capacity to repay.
