Spongocoel or paragastric cavity is the central body cavity of a sponge. It is universally present in all sponges. All sponge are aquatic. They are mostly marine, but some are found in freshwater. Mesenchyma layer of body wall (layer between placoderm and choanoderm) has fine dispersed spongins fibres and numerous spicules which form the skeleton.
