Fertilisation in angiosperms was first discovered by Strassburger in 1884 , but double fertilisation was discovered by Nawaschin in 1898 in Fritillaria and Lilium. It is an act of fusion of male gametes (two male nuclei) with egg cell and secondary nucleus which results in the formation of zygote and PEN.
