Suppose that distance is

=7.5

River running at

1.5

km/hr
Down stream

=7.5+1.5=9

km/hr
Upstream

=7.5-1.5=6

km/hr
From the question,

\;{x}/{9}+\;{x}/{6}=\;{50}/{60}

⇒ \;{2 x+3 x}/{18}=\;{5}/{6}

⇒ \;{5 x}/{3}=5

⇒ x=3 {km}
