The Cripps Mission was a failed attempt in late March 1942 by the British government to secure full Indian cooperation and support for their efforts in World War II. The mission was headed by a senior minister Sir Stafford Cripps. Lord Wavell who had succeeded Lord Linlithgow as Governor-General in October, made a way out from the existing stalemate the deadlock in India. He went to England for consultations in March He broadcast to the people of India the proposals of the British Government to resolve the deadlock in India on 14 th June which is called Wavel Plan. It is also known as Breakdown Plan. Lord Wavell invited a conference of 21 Indian Political leaders at Shimla to discuss the provision of Wavell Plan. Wavell Plan was constituted to resolve the political deadlock of existing India but he abandoned the proposals due to disagreement between leaders of Muslim League and Congress, and finally the proposals were dissolved at the Shimla Conference. Abul Kalam Azad negotiated on behalf of the congress government both with the cripps mission and the Shimla conference.
