What is the valency of Chlorine?

The electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom are called valence electrons.
The atomic number of Chlorine is 17.
The electronic configuration of chlorine is 2, 8, 7 $(1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^5)$ and is distributed in the shells K, L, M respectively.
It needs to gain 1 electron from the outermost orbit to attain octet.
On gaining one electron it forms chloride ion whose electronic configuration is then 2, 8, 8.
Hence, the valency of chlorine is 1.
