Here,

x_{1}=20 \%, x_{2}=25 \%

∴

Required discount

\;\; =(x_{1}+x_{2}-\;{x_{1} x_{2}}/{100}) \%

\;\; =(20+25-\;{20 × 25}/{100}) \%

\;\; =(45-5) \%=40 \%

Alternate method
Let amount

=100

1st discount

=20 \%

=\;{100 ×(100-20)}/{100}=80

2nd discount

=25 \%

=\;{80 ×(100-25)}/{100}=60

So, selling price

=60

Discount

=(\;{100-60}/{100} × 100)

=\;{40}/{100} × 100=40 \%
