In a certain city 90% of the population own a motor cycle. 15% own a car and everybody owns a car or a motor cycle or both. What percent of the population of that city own a car but not a motor cycle?

Solution:

Let n(A) and n(B) be the number of persons who own a motorcycle and a car respectively.

n(A ∩ B) = n(A) + n (B) – n (A ∩ B)

⇒ n (A ∩ B) = 90 + 15 – 100

∴ n (B – A) = n (B) – n (A ∩ B)

=15-5

=10%
