Two pipes P and Q can fill a tank in 10 hours and 12 hours respectively. If they are opened alternately for one hour each, starting with P. the time required to fill the tank is

Solution:

Part of tank filled in 2 hours

=1/10+1/12=11/60

Part of tank filled in 5 × 2 i.e., 10 hours

=55/60

Part remaining empty after 10 hours

=5/60=1/12

Time taken by P to fill

1/12

part of the tank

=(1/12)/(1/10)=10/12=50

minutes
∴ Total time taken = 10 hours 50 minutes
