Two taps A and B can fill a tank in 6 hours and 8 hours respectively. If they are opened alternatively every hour one after the other, starting with tap B then the time (in hours) needed to fill the tank is

Solution:

Part of tank filled in 2 hours

=1/6+1/8=7/24

Part of tank filled in 3 × 2 i.e., 6 hours

=21/24=7/8

Empty part after 6 hours

=1/8

part of tank can be filled by B in 1 hour
∴ Total time taken

=6+1=7

hours.
