If ‘a’ is an integer, what is the value of a ?
I.

a^{2}=9

II.

a^{2}+a=6

if the statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question.
if the statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
if both the statements I and II are sufficient to answer the question but neither statement alone is sufficient.
if both the statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and additional data is required.

Validate

Solution:

Given: ‘a’ is an integer.
I. Given:

a^2=9

⇒a=±3

It does not give a unique value
∴ I alone is not sufficient
II. Given:

a^2+a=6

a^2+a–6=0

(a+3(a–2)=0

a=–3

or 2.
It does not give a unique solution.
∴ II alone in not sufficient.
I & II Only ‘a’ = –3 can satisfy both the statements
∴ I & II together are sufficient.
