x > y

?
I. x is the smaller of the roots of

x^2-1=0

II. y is the real root of

y^3-1=0

if the statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question.
if the statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
if both the statements I and II are sufficient to answer the question but neither statement alone is sufficient.
if both the statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and additional data is required.

Solution:

Given: x and y are real numbers
I. Given:

x^2–1=0

It gives no information about y.
∴ I alone is not sufficient.
II. Given:

y^3–1=0

It gives no information about x.
∴ ΙΙ. alone is not sufficient.
I & II,

x^2–1=0,y^3–1=0

x=-1[–1 < (+1)]

and

y=1

x < y

∴ I & II together are sufficient.
