Pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) can be prepared by the dissolution of chromium trioxide in aqueous HCl. Addition of pyridine gives pridinium chlorochromate as orange cryotol.
PCC offers the advantage of the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes, whereas many other reagents are less selective.
