Conc. nitric acid is unstable to heat so when left for a while in glass bottle, it decomposes into nitrogen dioxide, oxygen and water. ${\mathrm{NO}}_2$ gas is reddish brown in colour and on dissolving into the nitric acid it makes it yellow in colour.
